Project Overview: Renovation

Looking toward the future of higher education living spaces, the design team researched ACUHO-I and the 21st Century Project ideals and goals. These 4 goals being sustainability, flexibility, community and technology were the focus of the appointed design committees and student input. New Living and Learning Centers are a living experience designed to entice and retain student users. The team applied the community ideal and neighborhood type feeling by incorporating large, decentralized lounge areas and kitchenettes with banquette seating in each wing as a space for gathering, interaction, seminars and luncheons. Corridor niches are found throughout to be used for quiet reading spaces, small discussions or private phone conversations. Floor to ceiling white boards and chalkboards are installed for spontaneous collaboration and self-expression. A large "pit" area in the lobby allows space for a fireplace, game tables and a platform/bar for artistic performances or art display. Technology can be found in each lounge space and computer "hub" area as well as wireless communication and technology friendly, unique, non-standard work/study spaces. Flexibility of furniture and open spaces provide the opportunity to adjust areas to various needs and activities. An urban theme is incorporated to emphasize the "green" focus. The materials, furniture and installation methods were specified with sustainability in mind. Cork flooring was specified as a rapidly renewable product in the kitchenettes. Recycled glass countertops can be found at the front reception station and lobby bar. Low VOC/Waterbourne paint is used and a variety of products with low emitting and recycled contact are installed throughout including carpet, toilet partitions, base, countertops, plastic laminate and ceramic tile. Furniture with sustainable material content and manufacturing methods were specified to complete the overall look and feel to this new approach toward higher education living.
